Last Meeting of the Semester

Our last meeting of the semester was held Tuesday
in conjunction with the Multicultural Club
for a joint pot-luck.  (Pictures will be posted soon!)

We have decided that the Anthropology Club
end-of-the-semester-dinner will take place as planned;
Thursday December 15th at 7pm at Fuji Ya in Minneapolis.
The address and phone number for Fuji Ya is:

600 West Lake Street
Minneapolis
(612) 871-4055

Let an officer know if you need to carpool.
Some of us will be on campus that Thursday.
Being conscious of the time is an issue, those of us
who can will be hanging out all evening,
come for as long or as little as you can or like.
Organizing this day has been a challenge and
I apologize if this proves difficult for anyone,
we try to be inclusive of everyone and their very busy
schedules and obligations and this day seemed to work
 best for most.

Another reminder that the meetings next semester
will be held on Mondays at 2pm.  We registered to
the same room assignment as last semester.
Information on the official room assignment will follow.

Have a great finals week and good luck!

MIA Edo Pop Fieldtrip

November 29, 2011 Meeting Minutes

Here are some club happenings in the near future and things we discussed at today's meeting:

Thursday, December 1, 2011 at 7pm:

The Anthropology Club field trip to the MIA, (Minneapolis Institute of Arts), will take place .  Meet at the glass doors inside the museum and we will proceed from there.

Tuesday December 6, 2011 at 3:15:

The joint Anthropology Club/Multicultural Club potluck.  This will be held in CC231, (this has changed from what was discussed in the 11/29 meeting as we cannot have food in the CLA). Meet in CC231 for the potluck/club meeting.  Bring a dish to share and feel free to bring friends and family if you choose.  This is to celebrate our accomplishments for the year and our completion of a joint campus-wide event.  This will be our last "club meeting" of the semester.

Thursday December 15, 2011 at 7pm:

Meet at Fuji Ya in Minneapolis for our end-of-the-semester club dinner.

At the meeting we additionally discussed reading "Guns, Germs and Steel"  and/or "The Third Chimpanzee," by Jared Diamond, between semesters to kick of our spring semester.  Get reading!

November 22, 2011 Meeting

Our last meeting we discussed some club items in brief then proceeded straight to some Anthro Club fun!

Some upcoming dates to remember as the doodle polls have closed for the MIA event and the Anthropology Club End-of-the-Semester dinner.  Per the tabulated votes the dates are as follows:

MIA Field trip: Thursday, December 1st at 7:00pm

(We will discuss the intricacies of this at the next meeting.  Basically you will be responsible for your own transportation but some of us may carpool from NHCC.  Meet us there if you choose).

End-of-the-Semester Dinner: Thursday December 15, 7:00pm at Fuji Ya

(Again, club members will be responsible for their own transportation and meal costs, we will reserve an area for the club to dine, meet us there or plan a carpool if you choose.)

Additionally, we voted on dates for the spring semester meetings and it has been decided that Anthropology Club meetings will take place Monday's at 2pm.  We will try to have the same room assignment if possible, as always I will keep you informed as to where the meeting will take place.

We still have exciting events planned for the spring semester.  Don't forget about our proposed conference/symposium, if you would like to present at the event please let us know, there if the discussion of incentives for presenters, besides a nice addition to your resume.

Anthropology Club Budget

The Anthropology Club has finally been granted a budget from the Student Life Committee and the Student Senate.  As of this afternoon, we will be able to contribute from our own funds money to the Talent Show and start planning an anthropology conference for the spring!  Hooray, hard work does pay off!

October 25 Meeting Minutes

Our meeting today was brief, but I have some critical issues to bring to your attention, namely addressing the impending talent show and the upcoming Student Senate meeting.

Headway has been made on the Anthropology Club's responsibilities for the talent show, the food has been decided and ordered.  Taher couldn't match the prices so we will be serving food from Big Marina and Godfather's Pizza.  Crystal, Stephanie and I visited Litin Paper this afternoon to wrangle some decorations for the event.  Those of you who signed up to hep with set-up, it looks like we may be setting up well before the event, (hopefully the evening of Tuesday November 1), given the quantity of decorations purchased I will certainly need all of your help and whatever can be accomplished prior to the day of the Talent Show would be excellent, since that day will present it's own tasks to be completed by the Anthropology Club.  Dr. Mallery has agreed to be a judge for the event as well.  Until the Talent Show is complete, this will remain the main focus of the club.

Additionally, your support is requested at this week's Student Senate meeting.  Two motions have been put forth by the Anthropology Club as well as our budget request.  At the advisement of other clubs who have successfully petitioned the Student Senate, they recommended a strong club presence in the meeting to bolster the requests arguments should it be necessary.  Therefore, I am requesting that any available students join us at this weeks meeting.  If we do not gain a position on this week's agenda, the next meeting will be November 10th.

I will keep you all informed as to the days that your assistance is needed for both the Student Senate and the Talent Show.  Some events we are considering for after the talent show are a cookbook fundraiser, an anthropology conference in the spring and gathering corporate sponsorship for participation in the National Geographic mtDNA project.

Until next time, thanks to everyone who has volunteered and contributed to the club so far this year, I really appreciate all the involvement.  Let's make Anthropology Club the most successful club on campus!

Meeting Minutes October 18

Today, October 18, 2011, in Anthropology Club we talked about some things that concerned the club.  Most of these were reminders and asking for suggestions, so not a lot of new material before MEA break.
We talked once again about getting T-shirts/posters/business cards done in the very near future to help boost club awareness on campus.  We're still looking for volunteers if we can find them, suggestions welcome too.  If we can't find anything of overt interest we'll just use a simple design.
As a club we are starting to think more seriously about our fund raising and 2012 event.  As of right now we're open to ideas.  We may be doing a cookbook with recipes from around the world for the fundraiser, and there have been talks of a guest speaker or a conference for the event.  But that doesn't mean we can't keep brainstorming!
We are still waiting on the budget to actually move forward on the talent show, but everything else is looking to be going well!  Any volunteers still very welcome and needed.
No Student Senate meeting this week, so are we are going next week.  As we are still requesting a budget all and any members are encouraged to come to show club support.  This will give us a better chance at getting a budget request approved.  Thursday October 25 from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Meeting Minutes from Oct. 11

Anthropology Club meeting for October 11, 2011

Our club treasurer has chosen to step down.  We are taking a vote of any volunteers next club.  The main duties held by the treasurer are budget requests and fund raising, Please feel free to volunteer if you can.

One idea that has been discussed for a fund raiser is a cookbook with recipes from the world over.  There was also talk of our 2012 event being an Anthropology Club Conference possibly.  Any other ideas are welcome.

The talent show joint event with the multicultural club is beginning to take off.  We are currently looking for volunteers for any of the various roles, tabling, reception, set up, tear down, etc.  We are still looking for more international candy ideas.  A possible theme suggested for the reception was masquerade.
If you can help at the talent show let someone know.  Remember the talent show is November 4th at 4 pm.  Dress rehearsal at 2 pm, set up at 9 am.

There was talk about attending a farmhouse archeological dig in Otsego this weekend.

September 27 Meeting Minutes

Anthropology Club Meeting September 27, 2011

For our meeting today we met with the Multicultural Club in CC 231.  We addressed a few of the items to be accomplished for the joint talent show we are all helping with.  The show itself will be held on November 4th at 3 pm, with a dress rehearsal at about 1 pm for a run through.  Auditions will be held from 2-4 pm on Tuesday October 4th in room CC231.  We are looking for judges for the Auditions to be representative of both clubs, let an officer know if you’d like to attend.
If possible we want members to begin thinking of if they would like to help with the staffing for the event, such as stage manager, reception manager, etc.  No positions will be determined until we are closer to the Talent Show date.
We want to include food for the event, probably mainly pizza.  There was also talk of hummus and Chinese food.  Suggestions are still welcome as always.
Anthropology Club Officers meeting to be held on Thursday September 29th in the Club Office room in the Campus Center.

September 27 Meeting Reminder

Just a reminder that today's Anthropology Club meeting will be held in CC231, (the upstairs of the campus center), to team up with the Multicultural Club in an effort to plan our combined campus-wide event.  The Multicultural Club is also looking for volunteers from our club to serve as judges for the talent show auditions with the second round taking place on November 4th from 2-4pm in CC231.  If you can attend, please let Kat know.

September 20, 2011 Meeting Summary

We have made some progress this week and are on our way to planning our first ever campus wide event, collaborating with the Multicultural Club.  Below you can view the transcript of what took place during today's meeting and what dates to be aware of for the future.  Immediate issues to address in brief include:

*Next meeting will not be held in our normal meeting place of CLA 134 at 3:30.  We will instead be meeting with the Multicultural Club starting at 3:15 in CC231, (located in the upstairs of the campus center), to solidify our plans for the upcoming Talent Show.  There will certainly be opportunity for involvement with this event, please share your skills, let's make this event great!

*We are seeking club members to form a committee for posters and eventually a logo and t-shirts.  Can you lend your graphic design skills to the Anthropology Club?

*Know of an anthropology related event you think the club should attend?  Email Dr. Mallery or Kat and we just may be able to organize a club field trip.  The Student Senate has "thawed" the  student organization budget and the Anthropology Club will finally have the opportunity to spend their allotted money. Help us decide how by coming to our meetings and sharing your ideas.

*Bring your friends and join us!  The Anthropology Club meets every Tuesday, (with the exception of the next meeting), in CLA134.  The more the merrier, after addressing club issues we like to round out the meeting by sharing anthropology related news so bring some to share.

Thanks and hope to see you at the next meeting!

Kat

Anthropology Club meeting September 20, 2011

In our meeting of Anthropology Club today the President of the Multicultural Club visited and happily informed us they would be more than happy to let us join them for a joint campus wide event.  The event that was chosen was a talent show to be most likely held on November 4 in the auditorium, to be followed by an international food and pizza luncheon.  Final details are still being worked out, as more information solidifies we will update accordingly.

**We are planning to meet on September 27th with the Multicultural Club to begin working on specific details to be taken care of.  These may involve set up, tear down, stage work, auditions, etc.  More will be discussed on this day. **
Additional Audition try-outs on October 4 from 2:00-4:00 PM
(All students are welcome to audition)

The next orders of business for Anthropology Club are club posters and club T-shirts, in order of highest priority first.  We are exploring options and talking to anyone with graphical design skill that could help.  If you could help out in any way, or know of someone who could, please contact an officer or bring it up at a meeting.  We would like to get these started as soon as possible.
The Student Senate’s club funding is still open, so we may request a budget.  This means we can possibly take a field trip, outing, etc. of our choosing if we decide soon enough to apply for funds.  So we are just trying to decide what activity we would want to pursue as a club.  As nothing has been formally decided yet, we are just inviting all members to try and think of particular activities they would like to explore outside of school.  Ideas can be brought up at club meetings or emailed to an officer.

Thanks!

Kat

Meeting Minutes September 13th, 2011

Anthropology Club meeting for September 13, 2011

President: Kat Richards
Vice President: Scott Sherwood
Treasurer: Shane Blegen
Documentarian: Andrew Contreras
Secretary: Kyle Jensen

In our first order of business today we voted in our new officers.  I’d like to say a quick thank you to all those that will be helping with the club, big or small.  A quick apology if I got any names wrong, I just copied them as well as I could off the sign in sheet.
We began to try and think of ideas for our campus wide event.  We bounced around a few ideas and options.  We finally tentatively decided to try and join our campus event day with another club, preferably in a way that represents both clubs ideals.
There was talk of seeing if the Multicultural Club might want to seek a joint venture for our event day.  If you have any ideas of what clubs events may possibly align with something we could do, ask the other club what they think and bring it up at our next meeting, or vice versa.
One additional possible idea was to implement Professor Mallery’s stone knapping as a speaker for the day, or a segment of our event.
Any additional ideas or related topics are more than welcomed for Anthropology Club.  Different articles, events, discussions, etc.  Just bring them in on a Tuesday meeting day to share.
A meeting for officers or anyone that would like to help plan out the bigger group meetings will be had on Thursday September 15th outside the CLA 120 lecture hall at 12:15 PM for about a half hour to discuss scheduling, paperwork, and related topics.

Proposed Logo

Here is our logo mock-up thus far.  Focus on the four main images in the middle, the globe; representing cultural anthropology could be replaced with the images below or possibly a mask or another idea.  Some phonetic image such as the "ae" combo or schwa, (upside down "e"), could replace the sound waves icon.

Any thoughts or input are appreciated.  There are some other ideas we are tossing around including a globe within a compass.

Post your comments below, the proposed deadline is Wednesday April 12th.

Here is a brief summary of what went on at our last meeting.

We voted for historian/ documentarian.  Andy and some others will be taking on this role.

Officers meeting will be taking place on Mondays @ 1:30.

Planned Activities and Business:
Apply for a budget & funding for t-shirts/event.

Study group is still in the works, Kelly and Kat will be meeting with Joe Crow to finalize the group on Tuesday April 12th.  In the meantime, if anyone is interested or seeking study help Dr. Mallery is always happy to help with office hours Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Jeopardy plans include  a computerized version of the game so the request for note cards with questions no longer applies.

Proposed ideas for our "What is Anthropology?" Week:

Establish a budget for food, supplies, prizes etc.
