Meeting Minutes, Meeting 11 Spring Semester 2012

I first want to thank all the presenters and helpers for making our first annual Anthropology Symposium a success.  We had a great array of papers and presentations encompassing a range of anthropology topics.  Cheers to those who helped, presented and participated behind the scenes.  At our last meeting we did discuss how to make the symposium even better next year, which would include more advertising and exploring different avenues for communicating the event to students at NHCC.
NHCC Anthropology Symposium presenters.

Also thank you to everyone who helped with Stress Relief Day, our atlatl target board was a hit and we successfully distributed many of our first-ever anthropology club can coolies to students and faculty.
Sparkling water staying cool in the coolie!
Atlatl target and some spears too, Stress Relief Day.
Students relieving stress on illustrated megafauna.

Tomorrow is Student Celebration Day, the Anthropology Club will be posted at our table for as much of the day as we can cover to inform students of the club and hopefully wrangle some future club leaders for next semester as well as enlighten the unfamiliar to the discipline of anthropology.  Please join us there if you can.  I believe we will be in the CLA hallway, between the CLA and LRC.

Our last club meeting of the semester will be April 30th when we will host our flintknapping demo. If you plan on participating please wear closed shoes and pants, flintknapping can be dirty and dusty so plan accordingly.  If you have your own leather gloves and eye protection please bring these also.

The Anthropology club's final off-campus activity will be to attend a lecture on underwater archaeology at the Science Museum on the evening of May 3rd.

As the semester and year wind to a close I would like to thank everyone for a truly successful year, and the Anthropology Club's most vibrant year yet.  Thank you to everyone who has made this year possible.

Meeting 9, Spring Semester 2012

With so much work having been accomplished in our previous week's meeting I have very little to report from our current meeting.  What I can say is that we have a lot of events planned for the end of the semester and a lot of work still to be completed.

In our meeting today we formalized what will be our atlatl target practice game for Stress Relief Day and got a peek at the actual target completed over the weekend by our pizza treasurer and secretary, Jeff.  The can coolies have officially been ordered with our logo for S.R.D and the symposium.  A flyer has been completed and is awaiting approval for the symposium as well.  We have decided also to cram one more event into the semester, a flintknapping demonstration, the date to be determined at the next meeting, but likely in the end of April, after the symposium.

Here is an overview of what is planned for the coming weeks:

Monday April 9 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting-finalize plans for the Symposium and Stress Relief Day, finish our entertainment.

Monday April 16 (2:30pm): Symposium "dress rehearsal." Tie up loose ends for S.R.D. and Symposium.

Wednesday April 18 (8am-?): Stress Relief Day

Friday April 20 (noon): Anthropology Symposium (6:30pm): Anthropology Club dinner at Kramarczuck's

***(sometime after this have flintknapping event)***

Monday April 23 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting

Monday April 30 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting

Thursday May 3 (6:30pm): The Archaeology of Pirates lecture at the Science Museum

Also, I have sent out an email JUST to presenters at the symposium requesting final titles so the program can get complied.
I will extend the deadline until this friday as I stated, but in the interest of formalizing a timeline, program and agenda, I do really have to close the door after this week.

Please email or contact a club member if you would like to volunteer for either the symposium or S.R.D..  It looks like we need help most for clean-up after S.R.D..  Meeting minutes will follow.  Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Meeting 8, Spring 2012

I would like to start by saying that the club has had a very successful week and accomplished a lot.  I am really looking forward to the coming events for the club as we near the end of the semester.  So many club members have been going "above and beyond" to use the cliche, and I couldn't be happier as club president to have been working with such dedicated students.  A "thank you" is owed to so many of you as well as our continuously supportive advisor, Dr. Mallery, for his tireless encouragement and dedication of time to the club.
That said, I have lots of good news to report on this week.  The viewing of the Pirates exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota was rescheduled at the last minute and apologies are in order for anyone who received the message while they were in transit.  The good news is that we will be planning a new trip where the club will also attend a lecture by archaeologist Russell Skowronek a Marine Archeologist, Professor of History and Anthropology at the University of Texas - Pan American, he is also an author.  The lecture will be a club relevant topic of "Pirates in the Archaeological Record."  Please join us for the lecture Thursday, May 3, 2012, 7-8:30 p.m.  The SMM is open until 9:30pm so that will allow us an hour to view the Pirates exhibit after the lecture.  Plan on meeting at 6:30pm at the map on the floor in the main lobby, we will proceed to the lecture area after that.  Students will be responsible for getting their own tickets, it is advised that you do this early.
The symposium is well under way and I am proud to report that we have at least seven presenters as of right now.  Coffee service has been ordered for the day of and arrangements are in the work for promotional materials to advertise the event.  The deadline to submit a title or subject of presentation is this Friday, March 30th.  I haven't heard from any additional presenters, but I would like to propose we have all of the students involved sorted out by this friday as well.  A "dress rehearsal" of the symposium will be held in CLA125, (our normal club meeting room), at 2:30pm on Monday April 16th.  Anyone participating or presenting at the symposium is required to attend this, or be in contact with a club officer so that we can be assured of your attendance for the actual symposium.  Volunteers are still needed for set-up and tear-down, please let a club member know if you are interested in volunteering.
We additionally still need volunteers for Stress Relief Day on Wednesday, April 18th.  At our next club meeting we will be resuming entertainment from the last meeting, beginning new entertainment and the construction of some atlatls and our target for our S.R.D. game.  We have additionally ordered promotional goodies which we will be handing out for prizes at this event.
A special "thank you" goes out to Stephanie for finally digitizing our club logo!  We are so grateful to have her graphic design skills put to use on something we have needed so badly for so long!  Thanks Stephanie for your hard work on this.  The logo looks great, you can check it out for yourself on our promotional materials at S.R.D. and the Symposium.  We hope to use the logo on some t-shirst very soon as well, so stay tuned..

Enjoy the meeting minutes from the March 26th meeting below, courtesy our secretary and pizza treasurer, Jeff.

Meeting 7, Spring Semester

We decided to forgo the entertainment for this week and will begin new entertainment at the next meeting.  We have much to discuss and accomplish for the upcoming Stress Relief Day and Anthropology Symposium.  I will address each event separately and what we need for each to make them successful.  I also would like to add that the more successful events the Anthropology Club is involved in on campus this semester, the more financing for the club and opportunities we can potentially have in coming years; so your involvement is appreciated and needed for the future success of this club!  We received notice that our budget for the next school year has been slashed by special meeting, but if we can make our next two events successful we may be able to retain our original and proposed budget.

First to be addressed is Stress Relief Day that we will be co-hosting with the VSA and other groups.  The event will be held April 18th with set up beginning at 8am.  We will need people to help with set up and to run our tables and games.  We will be constructing a new game, involving mega fauna and atlatls and will need help for that as well.  Please let us know if you can help and review your schedule, we will create a sign-up and request help at the next meeting.

Secondly to be addressed is our Anthropology Symposium to be held on April 20th at noon.  We are requesting that any interested parties inform myself or Dr. Mallery by this Friday, March 23rd, (email will suffice), or their intent to present, make a poster, etc.  Deadlines for titles or topics, (which means Dr. Mallery, myself or a club officer will need an official title of what your presentation/poster/etc. will be called and the correct spelling of your name), will be Friday March 30 so that we can begin constructing a program and agenda for the symposium at the following Monday club meeting.  As in the case of Stress Relief Day, we will need volunteers for the event and at the next meeting a volunteer sign-up sheet will be sent around.

For general club business we have voted to remove the student holding office as the Graphic Designer, we are in current and desperate need of someone to fill this role.  Duties will include finalizing our logo and preparing it for t-shirts and promotional materials, creating posters and material for our future events as well as other duties to be determined.  I would love nothing more than to proudly wear a North Hennepin Anthropology Club t-shirt at field school this summer, which brings me to another point.  We have been forwarded applications and information regarding a field school opportunity from Dr. Fleming, whom we met at the Science Museum during our field trip there.  If anyone is interested I can forward them the information, you should act quickly however, the decisions for acceptance will be made on April 8th.  Just a reminder about the field trip this Saturday to the Science Museum to view the Pirates exhibit, plan on meeting at the map on the floor outside the gift shop at 6pm.  We will wait for a short while then proceed to the exhibit.  In addition to aforementioned we also recapped our Como Zoo primate viewing field trip over spring break.
The Anthropology Club hard at work on spring break observing the
Primates at the Como Zoo.

Hope to see you at the next meeting.  We will be committing to involvement in both of our campus-wide events with sign-up sheets and attempting to lock down some of our desperately needed graphic design materials.  We will also be starting new entertainment and recapping our SMM field trip.

Hope to see you at the next meeting, and please remember that if you wish to volunteer for any of our events and cannot be present at the meetings please know that your contributions are always welcome.

Meeting 6, Spring Semester 2012

Not addressed in the meeting minutes are two dates that we decided on by popular vote during the meeting of when we will be attending the Como Zoo and the Science Museum to view the Pirates exhibit.

The Como Zoo field trip will be Monday March 12th at 10am.  Students will be responsible for transporting themselves to and from the museum but please be encouraged to share rides and ask for carpool options.

The Science Museum of Minnesota field trip will be held Saturday March 24th and we will plan on meeting there at 6pm, at the map on the ground in the entrance way outside of the gift shop.  Again, students will be responsible for transporting themselves to and from the museum but please be encouraged to share rides and ask for carpool options.

Again, to get things rolling on the symposium it would be great to get some more involvement by students willing to present.  The club will be asking that all presenters commit in the next coming weeks so we can plan the time accordingly and print programs and begin advertising; we will notify you of the deadline.  We have also decided that our post-symposium celebration will be held at Kramarczuk's Eastern European Deli in Northeast Minneapolis, 215 E Hennepin Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55414, we will be meeting there at 6pm.

We will be beginning a new session of entertainment at next weeks meeting.  You can find us at CLA 125 at 2:30 PM.

Meeting 5, Spring Semester 2012

I am happy to report that our membership has been growing by leaps and bounds this semester in the Anthropology Club.  We have a few events planned for subsequent gatherings and events during our meetings.  Unfortunately, the response from the doodle surveys for selecting dates for prospective events has been uninspired.  It has been decided that a vote will be taken at the next meeting, (February 27, 2012), for those interested in attending either the Como Zoo or the Science Museum to view the Pirates exhibit.

The symposium is well underway and the event form has been submitted.  We are still accepting submissions for papers/presenters/posters or otherwise.  The date again will be April 20, 2012.  The lecture hall and a smaller room have been reserved for whatever form of presenting we decide as a club.

We will resume the entertainment that was started at the last session and if time permits, begin new entertainment.  Just a reminder that there is no school next Monday in observance of President's Day.  Our next meeting will be held February 27, same place and time; CLA125 at 2:30pm.

Meeting 4 Spring Semester 2012

Hello Anthropology Club Members,

Below you will find the meeting minutes from the last meeting, held on 2/6/12 at 2:30.  As always, our meetings are held every Monday at 2:30 in CLA 125.  The meetings usually last an hour, occasionally longer if we are involved in entertainment or heated discussions.  Our officers meetings are held weekly meeting in our club office at 1:30pm, (CC 225), all officers are expected to attend or communicate their expected absence.

We are still awaiting responses from the doodle survey sent out with the last club email.  Many of you may have a junk mail filter that does not allow an email with a link to go to your inbox, please check your junk mail folder if you have not received this.  The last meeting minutes had two doodle survey links within the email, one for a date to attend the Como Zoo and one for a date to attend the Science Museum Pirates exhibit.  Pending information discussed at the last meeting, the AC may attend Pirates on February 22nd at 7pm.  A future email will confirm or deny this date.

The AC symposium planning is in the works.   The date will be April 20th beginning at noon.  We are reserving two rooms for presentations/posters, etc. We have started a sign-up for student presenters.  Please contact a club officer or Dr. Mallery if you would like to participate.

The AC has also decided to joint-host Stress Relief Day with the Veterans Club per their invitation to our club.  Our specific involvement has not yet been decided.

Please join us at the next meeting, we will be partaking in some entertainment and enjoying some food.

Additionally, our first Officer's Meeting with new elected officials was held February 6 at 1:30PM in our club office; CC225.  All officers are expected to attend weekly officers meetings.

Meeting 3 Spring Semester 2012

We had a fabulous meeting today and accomplished a lot.  We welcomed some new members to our meeting today; Jeff, Sydney, Ryan and Adam.  We held elections and the following formerly vacant seats have been elected by the group:

Vice President: Scott

Treasurer:  Kyle

Student Senate Representative:  Kyle

Secretary: Jeff

Marketing Maestro: Sydney

Kat will retain seat as president until the end of the semester and Andrew will remain in office as club documentarian.  Again, the next Student Senate meeting is Thursday, February 2, 2012 3:00PM upstairs CC.
Tentatively we have decided the date and time for the symposium will be Friday April 20th at noon.  The officers will look into room availability on this date and have more concrete date and times next meeting.  Again we still need presenters, papers, posters or any avenue you would like to communicate your anthropology knowledge to your peers for the symposium.

We have field trips planned to the Como Zoo to view the primates and to the Science Museum of Minnesota to view the Pirates exhibit, doodle surveys to select the best day are in your email.

We ended the meeting with Part II of entertainment from the previous meeting.  Hope to see you at next Monday's meeting; CLA 125 2:30pm.
