Meeting Minutes, Meeting 11 Spring Semester 2012

I first want to thank all the presenters and helpers for making our first annual Anthropology Symposium a success.  We had a great array of papers and presentations encompassing a range of anthropology topics.  Cheers to those who helped, presented and participated behind the scenes.  At our last meeting we did discuss how to make the symposium even better next year, which would include more advertising and exploring different avenues for communicating the event to students at NHCC.

Also thank you to everyone who helped with Stress Relief Day, our atlatl target board was a hit and we successfully distributed many of our first-ever anthropology club can coolies to students and faculty.
Sparkling water staying cool in the coolie!
Atlatl target and some spears too, Stress Relief Day.

Tomorrow is Student Celebration Day, the Anthropology Club will be posted at our table for as much of the day as we can cover to inform students of the club and hopefully wrangle some future club leaders for next semester as well as enlighten the unfamiliar to the discipline of anthropology.  Please join us there if you can.  I believe we will be in the CLA hallway, between the CLA and LRC.

Our last club meeting of the semester will be April 30th when we will host our flintknapping demo. If you plan on participating please wear closed shoes and pants, flintknapping can be dirty and dusty so plan accordingly.  If you have your own leather gloves and eye protection please bring these also.

The Anthropology club's final off-campus activity will be to attend a lecture on underwater archaeology at the Science Museum on the evening of May 3rd.

As the semester and year wind to a close I would like to thank everyone for a truly successful year, and the Anthropology Club's most vibrant year yet.  Thank you to everyone who has made this year possible.

Meeting 9, Spring Semester 2012

With so much work having been accomplished in our previous week's meeting I have very little to report from our current meeting.  What I can say is that we have a lot of events planned for the end of the semester and a lot of work still to be completed.

In our meeting today we formalized what will be our atlatl target practice game for Stress Relief Day and got a peek at the actual target completed over the weekend by our pizza treasurer and secretary, Jeff.  The can coolies have officially been ordered with our logo for S.R.D and the symposium.  A flyer has been completed and is awaiting approval for the symposium as well.  We have decided also to cram one more event into the semester, a flintknapping demonstration, the date to be determined at the next meeting, but likely in the end of April, after the symposium.

Here is an overview of what is planned for the coming weeks:

Monday April 9 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting-finalize plans for the Symposium and Stress Relief Day, finish our entertainment.

Monday April 16 (2:30pm): Symposium "dress rehearsal." Tie up loose ends for S.R.D. and Symposium.

Wednesday April 18 (8am-?): Stress Relief Day

Friday April 20 (noon): Anthropology Symposium (6:30pm): Anthropology Club dinner at Kramarczuck's

***(sometime after this have flintknapping event)***

Monday April 23 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting

Monday April 30 (2:30pm): Anthropology Club Meeting

Thursday May 3 (6:30pm): The Archaeology of Pirates lecture at the Science Museum

Also, I have sent out an email JUST to presenters at the symposium requesting final titles so the program can get complied.
I will extend the deadline until this friday as I stated, but in the interest of formalizing a timeline, program and agenda, I do really have to close the door after this week.

Please email or contact a club member if you would like to volunteer for either the symposium or S.R.D..  It looks like we need help most for clean-up after S.R.D..  Meeting minutes will follow.  Hope to see you at the next meeting!

Meeting 8, Spring 2012

I would like to start by saying that the club has had a very successful week and accomplished a lot.  I am really looking forward to the coming events for the club as we near the end of the semester.  So many club members have been going "above and beyond" to use the cliche, and I couldn't be happier as club president to have been working with such dedicated students.  A "thank you" is owed to so many of you as well as our continuously supportive advisor, Dr. Mallery, for his tireless encouragement and dedication of time to the club.
That said, I have lots of good news to report on this week.  The viewing of the Pirates exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota was rescheduled at the last minute and apologies are in order for anyone who received the message while they were in transit.  The good news is that we will be planning a new trip where the club will also attend a lecture by archaeologist Russell Skowronek a Marine Archeologist, Professor of History and Anthropology at the University of Texas - Pan American, he is also an author.  The lecture will be a club relevant topic of "Pirates in the Archaeological Record."  Please join us for the lecture Thursday, May 3, 2012, 7-8:30 p.m.  The SMM is open until 9:30pm so that will allow us an hour to view the Pirates exhibit after the lecture.  Plan on meeting at 6:30pm at the map on the floor in the main lobby, we will proceed to the lecture area after that.  Students will be responsible for getting their own tickets, it is advised that you do this early.
The symposium is well under way and I am proud to report that we have at least seven presenters as of right now.  Coffee service has been ordered for the day of and arrangements are in the work for promotional materials to advertise the event.  The deadline to submit a title or subject of presentation is this Friday, March 30th.  I haven't heard from any additional presenters, but I would like to propose we have all of the students involved sorted out by this friday as well.  A "dress rehearsal" of the symposium will be held in CLA125, (our normal club meeting room), at 2:30pm on Monday April 16th.  Anyone participating or presenting at the symposium is required to attend this, or be in contact with a club officer so that we can be assured of your attendance for the actual symposium.  Volunteers are still needed for set-up and tear-down, please let a club member know if you are interested in volunteering.
We additionally still need volunteers for Stress Relief Day on Wednesday, April 18th.  At our next club meeting we will be resuming entertainment from the last meeting, beginning new entertainment and the construction of some atlatls and our target for our S.R.D. game.  We have additionally ordered promotional goodies which we will be handing out for prizes at this event.
A special "thank you" goes out to Stephanie for finally digitizing our club logo!  We are so grateful to have her graphic design skills put to use on something we have needed so badly for so long!  Thanks Stephanie for your hard work on this.  The logo looks great, you can check it out for yourself on our promotional materials at S.R.D. and the Symposium.  We hope to use the logo on some t-shirst very soon as well, so stay tuned..

Enjoy the meeting minutes from the March 26th meeting below, courtesy our secretary and pizza treasurer, Jeff.
